Wheelchair Van Buying Guide

The process of buying a wheelchair accessible van can seem daunting with so many factors to consider, especially if this is your first time. But it doesn’t have to be!

At My Mobility Store, we understand that this is a big financial and emotional decision. When you shop with us, we take the time to listen to your needs and recommend the best option for you and your family.

Finding the right wheelchair van can take some time while you’re doing your research. But once you’ve found the right van for your lifestyle, the benefits will last for years to come.

Wheelchair Van Buying Tip #1: Know Your Needs

Buying an accessible van is not a one-size-fits-all process. Every person’s wheelchair needs are different, and there are multiple options and features to consider. While most wheelchair vans are about the same size, some converted vans have higher ceilings for taller individuals or larger power wheelchairs. Make sure the van you choose fits your individual preferences and needs.

For example, will you be driving the vehicle? If so, you’ll need to make sure the front seats are removable in the van. Is your wheelchair a larger model? You’ll want to make sure that there is enough space in the van for you to maneuver, and a van that is too small for your wheelchair can be a safety hazard.  Where will you be parking the van? This will let you know whether you should be shopping for a rear entry or side entry conversion van. Rear entry vans can be parked in more common spaces since the ramp does not need space on the side.

Helpful questions to ask yourself:

  • Who will be driving the van?
  • What dimensions are my wheelchair?
  • Where will I be parking?
  • How many people do I need the van to seat?
  • Do I need a side entry or rear entry van?
  • Do I need a power ramp or can I use a manual folding ramp?
  • What are my weight and height requirements?
  • What additional features do I want in my van?

Wheelchair Van Buying Tip #2: Set Your Budget

Wheelchair accessible vans can be expensive, especially if you’re adding a new accessible modification to a new vehicle. There are many affordable options, such as a pre-owned van that is already converted. It’s important to know what budget you have to work with to help narrow down what buying options to research.

Most converted vans can cost anywhere from $35,000 for used models to $90,000 for newer models. If you will be purchasing a new van and adding the conversion, it can cost even more. Knowing your budget will help you to save time and energy when shopping for your accessible van. And remember, most dealers offer financing options. Financing is available for all wheelchair vans at My Mobility Store.

Helpful questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I prefer a new or used van?
  • Can I afford to add a conversion to a new vehicle, or is it more in my budget to buy a van that is already converted?
  • Does my healthcare provider cover accessible vans?
  • Will I need financing?

Wheelchair Van Buying Tip #3: Shop From a Trusted Dealer

Buying an accessible van is a major investment, and you want to be sure you’re purchasing from an authorized dealer. Beware of dealers who want to sell you a van sight unseen. Do your research and read reviews of the dealer you’re considering buying from. Check that they are authorized to sell the brands you are interested in.

For example, My Mobility Store is an authorized dealer of VMI and BraunAbility, two of the most trusted manufacturers of wheelchair van conversions in the market today. We will also drive the van you’re interested in buying to your home for you to see the van in person without any obligation to purchase*.

Helpful questions to ask yourself:

  • Does this dealer have good customer reviews?
  • Is this dealer authorized to sell the brand of conversion that I’m interested in?
  • Is this dealer trying to sell me a van that I’ve never seen? If so, is this dealer willing to drive the van to me before I buy?
  • Does this dealer provide a valid warranty that covers my needs?

  1. Braden Bills says:

My son has to use a wheelchair while his injured legs recover, but he still wants to go to school. It makes sense that I would want to get a wheelchair accessible van for this! That way, I can still take him to and from school.

  2. Antonioloora says:

By compressing the suspension, the floor of the van lowers on the ramp side. Automatic systems are more expensive and might require buying an additional bracket when you change wheelchairs. Consumers have strong brand preferences for cars, and the same is true for wheelchair vans.
